The Advocate Burnie 6 Aug 1942

KILLED IN ACTION

Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Crisp, of Burnie, were advised by the military authorities yesterday that their third son, Gunner Thomas James Crisp, was killed in action on July 22.

Educated at Riverview College, Sydney, the late Gunner Crisp, upon his return to Tasmania, joined the staff of the E.S. and A. Bank, being stationed at Ulverstone and in the South.

He enlisted from Hobart. A well-known tennis player, like his three brothers, he won the N.W. Coast boys' singles championship at the Burnie junior tournament, and was successful in many other events. He was in his 28th year.

The other sons of Mr. and Mrs. Crisp are also members of the A.I.F. Major Peter Crisp is in England: Gunner Mark Crisp has been reported wounded and a prisoner of war in Java; and Lieut. Pat Crisp is serving somewhere in Australia,  after having seen service overseas.

Tom Crisp wasn't buried immediately. In fact it was four months after his death. This is explained in a caption to another print of the photo. Ron Ware states "EARLY GRAVE OF A SIG FRIEND (TOM CRISP) TOM TOOK MY PLACE IN THE CARRIER ON F.O.O. WHEN I WENT OUT WOUNDED. HE WAS KILLED NEXT MORNING. WE BURIED WHAT WAS LEFT OF HIM 4 MONTHS LATER UNDER SHELL FIRE. I INSCRIBED THE CROSS WITH A PENCIL BRUSH AND INK."

Car Sought By Police

The police are seeking information about a grey tourer motorcar which was travelling along the Channel Highway near Electrona from the direction of Hobart about 4 pm on Oct. 20.

An inquest, opened at Kingston yesterday by the Coroner (Mr Sorell) on the death of Darcy Roderick Cross, was adjourned to enable the police to trace the car. Cross died as a result of an accident near Electrona on Oct. 20.

Constant Leslie Dalco said he and Cross had five or six drinks at Margate during the afternoon. Cross had shandies. They left Margate by car for Snug, with Cross driving.

Near Electrona a grey tourer car approaching in the opposite direction on its wrong side of the road forced Cross to swerve. Cross' car struck a post swerved to the other side of the road and overturned.

James Kennedy Pearson, inspector of motor vehicles, said he inspected Cross' car. The hydraulic foot brake was not efficient at the first application of the pedal
